notes on money, slowly

Lending to family, honestly

Nobody needs help with the sum. What people need is a way to say the awkward part out loud before the money moves.

The conversation before the money is the whole of it.
The conversation before the money is the whole of it.

1Decide which thing it is

There are two transactions wearing one name. A gift, which you do not expect back, and a loan, which you do. Trouble starts when the two people involved have picked different ones and neither said so.

2Say the number and the date

Not because the date will be met — it often will not — but because a stated date turns a vague resentment into a specific conversation that can actually be had.

An unspoken expectation is not generosity. It is a debt that only one person knows about.

3Size it so that losing it is survivable

The practical rule: lend only what you could write off without changing your own plans. If the amount is larger than that, the honest answer is a smaller amount, not a firmer promise.

This sounds cold written down. In practice it is the opposite — it is the version where the relationship survives whatever happens to the money.
